What is a relay module? What are the advantages?

Created on 07.16
In the past, when people were developing low-voltage complete sets of equipment for automation technology, small and medium-sized intermediate relays would be added to the PLC control load. Nowadays, industrial control automation has developed towards integration, and thus relay modules have been developed. And what is a relay module? What are the advantages? Suzhou Shima De brings you a detailed understanding.
The PLC can immediately control the electromagnetic coil of the relay module. The angular contact points of the relay module then control the load. The advantage is that the relay module is small in size, only occupying half the volume of small and medium-sized intermediate relays. The contact point current is also larger than that of small and medium-sized relays, generally 10A, 12A, 16A, 30A, and contains zinc oxide varistors. When a relay breaks, the resulting flame has a magnetic blowing effect, which can extend the service life of the relay.
The relay on the relay module is very easy to replace if it is damaged. Just like small and medium-sized intermediate relays, it all comes with a base and can be directly plugged in for replacement. Maintenance is very convenient. The wiring of this relay module is also very convenient. The I/O, like the PLC, is in separate positions, with input on the top and output on the bottom. The I/O of traditional small and medium-sized intermediate relays are mixed together, and the wiring is only done after the first connection.
Relay modules can completely replace small and medium-sized intermediate relays. The electromagnetic coil voltages include 5V, 24V, 36V, 48V, 110V, 220V, 230V, etc. Both AC and DC power are available, and there are also stepless relay modules. The input does not distinguish between positive and negative poles. Compared with automation technology, it is NPN/PNP universal.

The characteristics of relay modules
  1. The same control module can achieve high or low frequency activation based on different wiring, with an activation current of no less than 1mA. Some 51 single-chip microcomputers have poor IO port output capabilities and must pull down or raise the driving capability circuit (default setting is low frequency activation).
  2. The advantage of low power frequency drive: When the system software is powered on for calibration, the load is less likely to work, and the safety factor is relatively high.
  3. Operating voltage: 3VDC to 12VDC(default setting is 5V operating), with optocoupler isolation, which can separate the operating voltage from the driving voltage, completing a dual power switch power supply system and enhancing the anti-interference capability.
  4. Measured voltage: Maximum 250VAC, 30VDC;
  5. Each set of relays has one set of open, one set of closed and one set of normally closed points, with a maximum allowable capacity of 10A/250VAC.
  6. Equipped with LED relay status display light (illuminated when the relay is closed and turned off when it is disconnected);
  7. Both the control end and the tested end adopt a brand-new terminal post design, which is more user-friendly.
The advantages of relay modules
  1. Long service life and high reliability: SSR has no mechanical parts and uses solid-state components for contact. As there are no moving parts, it can operate in high-impact and vibration environments. Due to the original characteristics of the electronic components that make up the solid-state relay, it has a long service life and high stability.
  2. High sensitivity, low operating output power, and good electromagnetic compatibility test performance: The input voltage range of solid-state relays is wide, the driving output power is low, and they are compatible with most logic integrated circuit chips without the need for voltage buffers or controllers.
  3. Rapid conversion: Due to the use of solid-state relays, the conversion rate of solid-state relays can range from a few milliseconds to a few microseconds.
  4. Low interference signal: Solid-state relays do not have an "electromagnetic coil" input, thus avoiding contact arcs and bounce, which reduces interference signals. Most AC output solid-state relays are zero-voltage power switches that conduct at zero voltage and close at zero current, reducing the sudden interruption of current waveforms and thereby lowering the transient effect of the power switch.
